The Little Free Cinema
2026-present
24/7 Microcinema
Located near The Wychwood Barns, Toronto
Programming by Rennie Taylor
The Little Free Cinema explores the intersections of film and architecture through a rejection of conventional cinematic space, represented in the multiplex, in reinventing the spectacle of cinema as public and accessible. The monthly curation is focused on Canadian experimental filmmakers.
Encouraging viewers to look through a peephole centered within an eye mimicking Toronto’s iconic “Neighbourhood Watch” signs, this microcinema exhibits contemporary Canadian experimental films that rarely, if ever, show within the public sphere. Inspired by the 24/7 public installation the Peephole Cinema (c. 2013) in Brooklyn, New York and Pleasure Dome’s portable analogue microcinema project, The Situated Cinema Project; in-camera, the Little Free Cinema references the design of the little free libraries found across residential spaces in Toronto. Increasing costs of venues for the exhibition of moving image work and the scarcity, or demolition, of affordable spaces for cultural and artistic production in the city were driving forces in the development of this microcinema project. Past and current programming includes established artists as well as emerging filmmakers.
